ORANGE VOCODER doesn't just give you one great vocoder sound, it gives you eight. Two different 24-band analogue emulations give you classic vocoder sounds in linear and minimum phase. The ORANGE VOC 3 and Classic ORANGE algorithms give you the state-of-the-art ORANGE VOCODER algorithm, as well as its digital classic counterpart from the original plug-in from 1998. The unique MR 1st order, MR 2nd order and MR 3rd order Multi-Resolution modes use wavelet transform mathematics to provide frequency-dependent time resolution and sounds ranging from extremely natural to completely synthetic, while Colorize applies the Modulator's phase response in addition to its frequency amplitude data, for a wild cross-synthesis effect.
ORANGE VOCODER is all about flexibility. The vocoder engine's Carrier and Modulator inputs can be sourced from the plug-in input, a side-chain input, and the internal synth, and changing the routing is as simple as clicking one or two switches. Want to swap Carrier and Modulator signals? Hit Flip. Use the synth instead of the side-chain? Click on Synth, done.
The Prosoniq Orange Vocoder Plug-In for PC and Mac VST provides you with an alldigital simulation of a 24-band high quality analog vocoder. It is a real-time8-voice vocoder that uses any input source/VST audio track or its ownbuilt in oscillator as a carrier signal, and any VST audio track as the modulator.Also onboard are a virtual analog synth with 2 osc. and 10 waveforms, 7 sampledsounds, Freeform EQ, Filterbank Reverb, LFO, a filter with distortionand an instant flip switch to instantly exchange carrier and modulator signals.
The flexibility is greatest in the fully customizable Freeform EQ. It has 12 nodes, ranging from 20 Hz to 20 kHz andresolving from +30 dB to -30 dB. This allows you to selectively shape thesounds processed giving you greater flexibility than many hardware vocoders. The OrangeVocoder sounds great and with unlimited memory for settings saved with your sequencesit makes a great and affordable Vocoder.
The vocoder section has been expanded with 22 additional algorithms, as well as features like formant shifting, expansion, and stereo operation. Likewise, the synthesiser section now offers Unison and Mono Legato modes, linear FM synthesis, and newfound modulation options.
Mac VST and RTAS, PC VST Reviewed: PC VST versionThe vocoder has been around since 1939, when it was originally developed by Bell Labs for the encryption of speech for the military. Nowadays it's rather better known for novelty sounds like talking guitars, but it has many other musical applications, from ethereal pads to exotic drum loops. The vocoder works by splitting the frequency spectrum of the main 'modulator' audio signal into a number of bands, and using the levels of these bands to control the levels of frequency bands in a second, 'carrier' signal. Thus, the frequency content and dynamics of the modulator signal are imposed on the basic tonality of the carrier to provide the unique vocoder effect (for a more detailed explanation, see Gordon Reid's Synth Secrets from SOS July 2000).
Sadly, Orange Vocoder can't currently use MIDI notes to adjust the synth notes in real time, although I gather Prosoniq are working to make this possible in an update. In the meantime you could paste different chords into different presets and switch between them using program changes. Pronsoniq also claim that the vocoder isn't compatible with either Cubase 5.0 or Nuendo, although this is news to me, as I discovered this information after I successfully used it in Cubase 5.0.

In other words, only the frequencies that are present in the modulating signal are retained in the carrier signal after the envelope is applied. In software, vocoders can usually function as inserts on an audio track, as an instrument on a virtual instrument track using a sidechained input from another audio track or a live external source, or in the case of devices like Vocal Synth 2, either as an audio insert effect or virtual instrument.
Auto-Tune is designed to sort of quantize a vocal signal to the closest pitch or scale degree. You begin to get that robotic vocoder-esque sound when you push it hard so that the pitch jumps abruptly from note to note. But the process is significantly different from vocoding.
